Molson Coors Canada have launched a new brand extension to their flagship Molson Canadian lager.
Molson Canadian 67 is a light beer brewed to 3.0% abv with 67 calories, which the press release notes is “half the calories of a glass of wine or a single mixed drink and one-third fewer calories than light beer.”
Also from the press release:
Molson Canadian 67 is specially brewed for Canadian beer tastes by blending two-row malted barley, a touch of wheat, and a triple hopping method using four different varieties of hops. The result is a light beer with rich colour, creamy foam, and the clean flavour you expect from other light beers with only two-thirds the calories.
Molson Canadian 67 has been launched in Ontario and Atlantic Canada to start, with a roll-out to other provinces planned to follow by the end of November.

FREDERICTON, NB – The CBC reports that sales have been on a steady decline for Selection Lager and Selection Light, the two private label beers brewed by Moosehead for the government owned NB Liquor chain.
After combined sales of 26,677 12-can cases of the brands in the 19 days of March that they were available, sales dipped just over 18,000 cases in April and May, and continued to decline throughout the summer, slumping to only 10,500 cases in August.
Most notably, only 4 cases of the brands were sold on Labour Day in three of the six NB Liquor outlets that were open for the holiday.
Despite the relatively poor showing for the two discount brands, which the government agency launched in an effort to stem the tide of New Brunswickers driving to Quebec for cheaper beer, NB Liquor spokesperson Nora Lacey tells the CBC that they consider the brands a success, and will continue to market them for the foreseeable future.

FREDERICTON, NB – The CBC reports that Northampton Brewery has received $30,000 in funding from the provincial government that it intends to put towards equipment and upgrades that will allow them to start exporting their Picaroons beers.
Co-owner Sean Dunbar tells the CBC that the brewery has just shipped a small amount of beer to several private liquor stores in Nova Scotia to test the market, and hopes to get listings at the NSLC this fall.
They will also be adding new tanks and performing brewery upgrades over the winter that will allow them to expand their output, with hopes of moving into other export markets starting in the new year. These expansions also include a retail outlet to open in downtown Fredericton later this year.

HALIFAX, NS – Greg Nash, known for creating award-winning beers for the brewpub side of Pump House Brewery in Moncton for the last couple of years, has left to return to Halifax where he was previously brewmaster at Garrison Brewing.
In the latest (and possibly last) post on his Pump House Brewers Blog, Nash writes the following:
I am moving on to work on a new venture in Halifax, NS. Myself and a partner will be opening a microbrewery (or trying damn hard to) in the coming months there. It’s been a great stay here in Moncton and I’d like to thank everyone for your ongoing and continued patronage.
He also notes that he may continue working with Pump House on an occasional consulting basis.
In addition to working towards opening a new brewery, Nash has taken on a brewing position at the Hart & Thistle, a new brewpub on the Halifax waterfront. His first two beers for them, 37hr Simcoe SMaSH IPA and Black Nitro Ale will be officially launched with a release party at the pub on Wednesday July 29th at 7:00 PM. Nash has also started a new Hart & Thistle Brewers Blog to share details about upcoming beers and other info.

Papadopoulos promises that there will be four or five styles of beer available at all times, including a number of seasonals, while MacArthur states that the menu will feature a combination of North American bar staples (wings, nachos, etc.) and “modern versions of ‘old-school’ British pub food”.

ST. JOHN, NB – Moosehead Breweries are launching their first new national brand since taking Moosehead Lager coast-to-coast almost two decades ago. Cracked Canoe is a new light lager (3.5% abv, less than 100 calories) aimed at an older demographic.
The New Brunswick Business Journal quotes brewery spokesperson Joel Levesque as saying “research showed that there was a segment of the beer-consuming market, the older, more mature consumers, that were looking for something different, something lighter in taste, lighter in calories and lighter in alcoholic volume.”
Levesque also notes that “(largely) no one else is in this market segment; there are some premium import brands that are in this area, but ours will be priced considerably lower.”
Cracked Canoe will be officially launched later today with a press conference at Canoe Restaurant & Bar in Toronto, and will be rolled out to stores all accross Canada (except Quebec) by May 1st.
