TORONTO, ON – In an award ceremony held last night at The Rhino in Toronto, Steam Whistle Pilsner was named the winner of the inaugural edition of the Ontario Brewmasters Cup.
Created by beer writers Ben Johnson of blogTO, Crystal Luxmore of The Grid, Greg Clow of Canadian Beer News, and Jordan St. John of QMI/Toronto Sun, the competition started in mid-August with 16 beers – four selected by each writer, in four different categories. A public vote selected a top beer in each category, and those four – Muskoka Mad Tom IPA, Wellington Imperial Stout, Denison’s Weissbier and Steam Whistle – went into the final round of voting, which ended on Labour Day weekend.
The organizers are planning to bring back the award in 2013, possibly enlisting more local beer writers to participate in the initial nomination round. More details will be announced at a later date.
