OLDS, AB – A month before the first students are due to arrive, the Olds College Teaching Brewery has released its official logo and announced the four core brands that will be available year-round.
Selected via a naming contest that featured entries from across the country, the four beer names – and the brief stories behind them – are as follows:
Aggie Ale: “Acknowledges the heart of what we were and what we continue to be, today and into the future. The kick that started it all… our roots run deep in Agriculture”
Old Skhool: “A reflection of the College’s mandate as a place for all kinds of learning. 2013: Celebrating 100 years of education!”
Hay City: “Honouring the community of Olds that was once known as Hay City, an important source of hay for communities originally served by the CPR.”
Prairie Gold: “A reminder of the golden fields of barley and grassy hills surrounding the community of Olds.”
Modelled on a similar program and brewery at Ontario’s Niagara College, the Olds College Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management program will have 26 students starting the two-year curriculum in September. The students will work together with the experienced brewers on the teaching staff to brew the flagship beers as well as other one-offs and seasonals as part of their course studies. and the beers will be available to purchase from an on-site retail store, with proceeds going to support the program.
