VICTORIA, BC – Phillips Brewing has announced the release of a new installment in the Twisted Oak Stillage Series of limited edition barrel-aged beers.
Twisted Oak Barrel-Aged Rauch is a variation on a traditional German Rauchbier (smoked beer) that was brewed using smoked applewood and cherrywood malt. It’s further described as follows:
The specialty grain that endows this beer with its delicate smoke flavour was grown by a dedicated farmer on the fields of Virginia’s historic northern neck, by the shores of Chesapeake Bay. The barley malt was then processed using a traditional floor malting process and then wood-fire kilned at Copper Fox Distillery, housed in a former cider mill in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. After brewing, this beer was gently aged in wet whiskey barrels where sweet peat flavours blended with vanilla and candied brown sugar, infusing the Rauch with a rich complex flavour profile that finishes with a hint of black pepper and a wisp of smoke.
Twisted Oak Barrel-Aged Rauch is available now at select private liquor stores in British Columbia. A draught version will be available to sample during a tasting event at the Phillips brewery on Thursday February 27th from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
This is one of the most weirdly interesting beers I have tasted in a long time.
