YELLOWKNIFE, NT – Beer in Canada reports that the Northwest Territories may be close to ending its nearly 20 year streak of being without a brewery, as a brewpub proposed last spring is hoping to finally be open this coming summer – albeit in a different location than originally planned.
NWT Brewing is being founded by Fletcher and Miranda Stevens, with the couple aiming to open later this year at 3905 50th Avenue in Yellowknife, several blocks from a previously planned location that turned out to be unsuited for a brewing operation.
The brewpub received tentative approval from Yellowknife City Council earlier this week, with final approval expected next Monday – but as Fletcher told Beer in Canada, the project still requires approval from the NWT Liquor Commission. “We are working with some pretty old liquor laws here,” he notes, “and updating them to accommodate this craft beer boom that’s going on through the rest of the country could pose our biggest hurdle.”
That said, the pair is confident that they’ll be brewing this summer. To see how it pans out for them, check out the NWT Brewing Facebook page and Twitter feed.
