NORTH VANCOUVER, BC – Deep Cove Brewers & Distillers and hops supplier Hops Connect have announced the release of a commercial batch of the winning beer from last fall’s Hops Connect Cup university homebrewing competition.
As Beer Me BC reports, the contest held last October featured beers from members of two university homebrewing clubs – University of British Columbia’s brUBC and Simon Fraser University’s S.F.Brew – pitted against each other in five categories. The Best in Show beer – Hop-A-Rella IPA by S.F.Brew members Natasha Peiskar and Jill Plotnikoff – was awarded the Hops Connect Cup, and the winners were teamed up with Deep Cove’s brewmaster Kevin Emms to produce a full batch of their recipe for commercial release.
The resulting beer, now known as University Brew Off IPA, is a 7% abv and 78 IBU ale brewed with Cascade, Citra and Amarillo hops. It was debuted at a launch party held earlier this month at the Hop & Vine Tap House in Burnaby, and is now available in 650 ml bottles at select private liquor stores throughout BC and at the Deep Cove retail store.
