GUELPH, ON – Wellington Brewery has announced the return of collaboration with The Lacuna Collective – poet and beer educator Truth Is…, beer sommelier Lexi Pham, and Beer. Diversity. founder Ren Navarro – “three badass, take-no-prisoners black women [that are] the missing piece in the craft beer industry that doesn’t really acknowledge or have space for BIPOC, LGBTQ2IA+, and disabled people.”
Nothing Civil IPA (6.5% abv) was originally released last August, with a second batch following in October, and raised $5,415 for Black Lives Matter Canada.
The beer is described as follows:
This smooth yet provoking IPA is made with Golden Promise malt, Pacific Jade and Hallertau Blanc hops, and Vermont style yeast. With notes of pineapple, passionfruit, lemongrass, citrus, and cracked black pepper, this delicious IPA stands for what’s right in the fight for racial justice!
Each can of Nothing Civil features the following poem by Truth Is… on the label:
Everything you can see about us has been recognized as suspicious
has been diagnosed as a threat
has been taught to be feared
Our skin is Loraine’s Raisin in the Sun just as much as it is Rodney’s spilled blood in the moonlight
Our skin is Nina on the stage
Our skin is Diallo reaching for his wallet
Our skin is Martin holding skittles
Our skin is Malcolm speaking at the podium
Our skin is Vincent and Wayne on their podiums
Our skin is the real McCoy
Our skin is Emmett’s face
Our skin is Mamie’s face at his funeral
Our skin is jogging
Our skin is sleeping
Our skin is Rosa on the bus
Our skin is Nelson’s prison sentence
Our skin is Sandra’s prison sentence
Our skin is breathing
Our skin is calling our mothers
Our skin is not resisting
Our skin is not resisting
Our skin is not resisting
Our skin is resistance
Nothing Civil IPA is available now at the Wellington Brewery retail store and online shop. 100% of the proceeds from this year’s edition will be donated to the Black Health Alliance.
