TORONTO, ON – Burdock Brewery has announced the opening a new production brewery and retail shop in Toronto’s Kensington Market neighbourhood.
Situated in the former SASMART building on the north side of Bellevue Park, the new space quietly opened in early March in advance this weekend’s official grand opening.
In a press release announcing the opening, owners Jason Stein and Matt Park provided further details:
In 2019 we were at a crossroad; we had been brewing over capacity for 4 years at Bloor St. and needed to expand so we could keep up with demand. It was either we move out of the city where space would be cheaper / more accessible or do the hard thing and open another location downtown. We were lucky enough to find a perfect spot in Kensington Market that was big enough to meet our brewing needs (good square footage and tall ceilings). We’re so happy to be in Kensington Market with all the other incredible makers, restaurants, and retailers.
Our Kensington Market brewery is a production brewing facility and retail store. Our Bloor Street brewery will stay the same (brewery, restaurant, music hall), but will make a little bit less beer there because we can now make A LOT more in Kensington Market, about 5 times more. The brewhouse and all the fermentation tanks at the new location were manufactured in Canada (Abbotsford, BC). It was important to us to have the bulk of the equipment made in Canada. The equipment is all top of the line and will give us a degree of technical accuracy and ability that was unavailable to us on our original brewpub-style system.
In addition to the expanded brewing system, the new location features a “very sunny open concept beer shop with a full view of the production facility [and] stocked with fresh new releases, rare deep-cellar beers, and a big selection of our favorite snacks from around the city.”
Burdock Kensington Market is located at 6 Denison Square, and will be opening at 11:00 AM daily. For this weekend’s grand opening, there will be rare cellar beers available to sample, free coffee from Jimmy’s Coffee and custom cookies by Lindsey Gazel, balloons for the kids, and a free Burdock label art poster for the first 20 customers on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
