Miski Brewing Now Open in Barrie, Ontario

BARRIE, ON – A new brewery focussed on producing beers using one of the world’s oldest cultivated grains has officially opened in Barrie, Ontario.

Miski Brewing has been founded by Ricardo Irivarren, and boasts a “unique brewing process using the highest quality gluten-free and organic ingredients, with quinoa at the heart of every batch.”

As described in the news release:

The groundbreaking craft beer is a result of a two-year multi-partner collaboration where several parties invested their time and research to create a quinoa-based beer recipe that responded to the taste profile and quality of the discerning craft beer market.

Head brewer Daniel Fonseca and operations manager Rodrigo Ribeiro, who were both a part of the development team at the Niagara College Canadian Food and Wine Institute Innovation Centre from 2019 to 2021 who developed the prototype recipe, are now full-time staff. The company also worked with Georgian College’s Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre on their zero-waste project, which repurposes their processed quinoa into animal-friendly treats and feed.

The brewery’s first beer is Ancestral Ale (4.7% abv):

Experience the extraordinary with Ancestral Ale, our remarkable creation, and a pioneer in the world of all-quinoa beers. This truly unique craft beer embodies ancestral goodness, offering a perfect harmony of floral aromas and surprising citrus notes that delight the senses. With a smooth, dry finish and low bitterness, Ancestral Ale provides a truly satisfying drinking experience. Indulge in the extraordinary and elevate your beer journey with Ancestral Ale.

Two other beers in the Ancestral line-up – Ancestral Belgian (6.2% abv) and Ancestral Light (3.5% abv) – are planned to be released soon.

Ancestral Ale is available now at the brewery (70 Ellis Drive, Unit 4 in Barrie), and at select restaurants and bars. Miski will also be pouring samples at upcoming events including Because Beer in Hamilton on July 14th and 15th, and Toronto’s Festival of Beer on July 28th to 30th.
