Great Lakes Brewery Releases Kellerbier and Hummingbird Pre-Prohibition Lager

TORONTO, ON – Great Lakes Brewery has announced the release of a pair of new limited edition lagers.

Kellerbier (4.5% abv):

Ahh Kellerbier, the result of Franconian brewers in the middle ages going rogue. When you limit your brewers to using only four ingredients by law, things can get a bit crazy, and boy, did they! In this case, brewers unapologetically added another handful or two of hops.

As one can imagine, Bavaria’s entire world was turned upside down. The mischievous and rebellious brewers were praised, and in the age when vertical windmills, spectacles, and mechanical clocks were invented, the very first hop craze was born.

Hummingbird Pre-Prohibition Lager (5.3% abv):

We got together with our friends at Sonnen Hill to discuss brewing a beer together. Just then, we noticed a flash of colour in the garden. Like a whimsical muse sent from the heavens, a hummingbird materialized before us. It hovered in mid-air, defying gravity and belief alike.

So, did this hummingbird bestow upon us an otherworldly inspiration to brew this pre-prohibition style lager that would encapsulate the spirit of the fleeting encounter, and bear it’s name? No, not really. It’s just a style that the brewers at Sonnen Hill and here at GLB wanted to make.

Both beers are available today – along with returning favourites Sultana Solero IPA, Meanwhile… Down in Moxee IPA, and Citraddiction XPA – at both Great Lakes locations and the brewery’s online shop.

They will also be featured at the Great Lakes Oktoberfest party, taking place on Saturday September 16th from 1:00 to 6:00 PM at the Etobicoke location.
