VANCOUVER, BC – A new award that has been “established to celebrate the remarkable contributions of outstanding individuals in the brewing industry” has announced its inaugural winner.

The John Mitchell Award for Brewing Excellence was created to honor the legacy of the late John Mitchell, Canada’s original craft brewer and a pioneering figure in the craft beer movement who played a pivotal role in shaping the industry. In 1982, John Mitchell started an economic and cultural revolution when he pioneered Canada’s first craft brewery in Horseshoe Bay BC. John Mitchell’s dedication to innovation, quality, and community- building serves as an inspiration to brewers and beer enthusiasts worldwide. Today, we are honoring his legacy while celebrating the next generation of brewers who have made a major impact on Canada’s craft beer industry.
Tony Dewald, the 2023 John Mitchell Award for Brewing Excellence recipient, has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to advancing the art and science of brewing. With a career spanning over three decades, Dewald has consistently pushed the boundaries of brewing, creating unique and memorable beer experiences.
